9 Troubleshooting
This chapter provides information for troubleshooting issues with your router.
TIP: · Noncompliant operating environment might cause router failure. You need to clean your router periodically and make sure the installation environment meets the requirements (as described in "Preparing for installation"). · You are required to perform power-on test on the standby router periodically. |
Troubleshooting methods
When your router fails, you can use the following methods to troubleshoot the router:
· At the CLI, you can use related commands to display hardware information, and locate hardware failures.
· The MPU provides LEDs for the fan trays and MPUs. You can locate failures according to the LED status on the MPU. For more information about the LEDs on the MPU, see H3C CR16000-M Routers Hardware Information and Specifications.
· The interface modules provide port status LEDs, with which you can detect port failures. For more information about port status LEDs, see H3C CR16000-M Routers Hardware Information and Specifications.
If you cannot locate failures by following the guidelines in this chapter, contact H3C Support. For more information, see "Technical Support."

1. Execute related commands to locate the fault.
2. If a configuration error is found, re-configure the settings or restore the factory-default settings.
3. If the issue persists, contact H3C Support.
Power supply failure
When a power supply is operating correctly, its status LEDs are green. For more information about the status LEDs on power supplies, see H3C CR16000-M Routers Hardware Information and Specifications.
Symptom
A status LED on a power supply is off or not green.
|
NOTE: After a power supply is disconnected from its power source, it is normal that its LEDs stay on for several seconds. |
Solution
To resolve the issue:
1. If a status LED is orange, the power supply is in high temperature and has transitioned to over-temperature protection state. Be sure that adequate cooling and heat ventilation is provided for the device.
2. If a status LED is red, the power supply has transitioned to a self-protection state because of a power issue. Check for and resolve the output short-circuit, output overcurrent, output overvoltage, input undervoltage, or remote disconnection issue.
3. Examine the power cord connection. If the power cord is loose, connect the power cord again. If the power cord is broken, replace it.
4. Examine the power supply installation. If the power supply is installed securely, reinstall the power supply to make sure it has a close contact with the backplane of the router.
5. Examine the power source. Make sure the power source operates correctly and provides a voltage as required by the router.
6. If the router has an empty power supply slot, remove the power supply, install the power supply in the empty power supply slot after all LEDs on the power supply are off, and verify that the power supply can operate correctly.
7. Install a new power supply of the same model in the slot where the original power supply resides, and connect it to the same power input end. If the new power supply operates correctly, the old power supply has failed. You must replace the old power supply.
Fan tray failure
The MPU provides a FAN LED to indicate the operating status of fan trays. The FAN LED is steady green when the fan trays are operating correctly.
Each fan tray has a RUN LED to indicate its operating status. The RUN LED is steady green when the fan tray is operating correctly.
Symptom
· On the MPU, the FAN LED is off or steady red.
· The RUN LED on a fan tray is off or steady red.
Solution
To resolve the issue:
1. If all the LEDs on the router are off, verify that the power supplies are operating correctly. For more information, see "Power supply failure”.
2. Verify that the air inlet and outlet vents of the chassis are not blocked. If they are blocked, clean them for good ventilation.
3. Remove and reinstall the fan tray to make sure it is installed securely in the slot.
4. Verify that the unused interface module slots and power supply slots are installed with filler panels.
5. If the issue persists, contact H3C Support.
MPU failure
When an MPU is operating correctly, the RUN LED on it flashes at 0.5 Hz and the ALM LED is off.
Symptom
The RUN LED on an MPU is off or steady on.
Solution
To resolve the issue:
1. Verify that the power system is operating correctly. For more information, see "Power supply failure”.
2. Remove and reinstall the MPU to make sure it is installed securely.
3. Press the reset button on the MPU to reset the MPU. After the MPU is reset, verify that the RUN LED is on.
4. If the router has an empty MPU slot, install the MPU in the empty MPU slot, and verify that the MPU can operate correctly.
5. If the issue persists, contact H3C Support.
Interface module failure
When an interface module is operating correctly, the RUN LED on it flashes at 0.5 Hz.
Symptom
The RUN LED on an interface module is off or steady red.
Solution
To resolve the issue:
1. Verify that the MPU is operating correctly. For more information, see "MPU failure."
2. Verify that the interface module is compatible with the system software. Upgrade the system software if it does not support the interface module.
3. Calculate the total power consumption, and make sure a sufficient number of power supplies are installed. For more information, see H3C CR16000-M Routers Hardware Information and Specifications.
4. Ensure that the interface module is installed securely. Remove the interface module, reinsert it into the slot, and then rotate inward the ejector levels until ends of the ejector levers touch the front panel of the interface module tightly.
5. If the router has an empty interface module slot, install the interface module in the empty interface module slot. If the interface module operates correctly, the previous slot is faulty.
6. If the issue persists, contact H3C Support.
Interface failure
MPUs and interface modules provide a LED for each interface. The LED is on if the interface is operating correctly.
|
NOTE: A management Ethernet port has two LEDs, LINK and ACT. When the LINK LED is off, the management Ethernet port fails. |
Symptom
The LED for an interface is off.
Solution
To resolve the issue:
1. Make sure the MPU or interface module where the interface resides operates correctly. For more information, see "MPU failure" or "Interface module failure."
2. Verify that the cable is connected correctly for the interface. For information about how to correctly connect a cable to an RJ-45 interface, "Connecting a twisted pair cable." For information about how to correctly connect a cable to an optical interface, see "Installing a transceiver module and connecting optical fibers."
3. Verify that the cable is in good condition. Use the cable to connect two interfaces of the same type that operate correctly. If the LEDs of the two interfaces are on, the cable is in good condition. If the LEDs are off, the cable is faulty. Replace the cable. For more information, see H3C CR16000-M Routers Hardware Information and Specifications.
4. If the interface uses a transceiver module, perform the following tasks:
a. Make sure the transceiver module is compatible with the interface and the cable.
b. Replace the transceiver module.
5. Verify that the speed and duplex settings of the interfaces on the two ends are the same.
6. If the issue persists, contact H3C Support.
i |
NOTE: · If an interface is brought down by the shutdown command, use the undo shutdown command to bring up the interface. · After an interface fails, you can use an idle interface of the same type (if any) on the router to replace it. |
Switching fabric module failure
A switching fabric module uses a RUN LED and ALM LED to indicate its operating status. When the switching fabric module is operating correctly, the RUN LED flashes at 0.5 Hz and the ALM LED is off
Symptom
