Chapter 1  Web Cache Redirection Configuration

&  Note:

The S3600-SI series switches do not support Web cache redirection.

1.1  Overview

Hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) is one of the most widely used approaches to access the Internet. Ethernet switch provides Web cache redirection function, which helps relieve the pressure on the links connecting to WANs and improve the speed to access the Internet. The following figure shows an implementation of Web cache redirection.

Figure 1-1 Web cache redirection

As shown in the figure, PC is one of the users in the LAN connected to the switch, and Web cache is the server that stores the Internet information often browsed by the users in the LAN. When Web cache redirection is enabled on the switch, the access to the Internet via HTTP is redirected to Web cache. If the desired contents are in the Web cache, the Web cache directly forwards them to users, thus eliminating the access to the Internet. If the cache does not have the information, the users will log onto the Internet to obtain information.

1.2  Web Cache Redirection Configuration

1.2.1  Configuration Prerequisites

l           The route between the switch and Web cache is reachable, and the Web cache function is enabled on the Web cache.

l           The IP address and MAC address of the Web cache and the VLANs whose HTTP traffic is be redirected to the Web cache are determined.

l           The port through which the switch is connected to the Web cache and TCP port number used by HTTP are determined.

1.2.2  Configuration Procedure

Table 1-1 Configure Web cache redirection in system view

Operation

Command

Description

Enter system view

system-view

Configure Web cache parameters

webcache address ip-address mac mac-address vlan vlan-id port interface-type interface-number [ tcpport tcpport-num ]

Required

Specify a VLAN whose HTTP traffic is to be redirected to the Web cache

webcache redirect-vlan vlan-id

Required

You can specify multiple VLANs for Web cache redirection so that the HTTP traffic of the users in these VLANs can be redirected to the Web cache.

By default, HTTP traffic is not redirected to the Web cache.

Display Web cache redirection configuration and the state of the Web cache

display webcache

Optional

This command can be executed in any view.

Specify a VLAN whose HTTP traffic is to be redirected to the Web cache

webcache redirect-vlan vlan-id

Required

You can specify multiple VLANs for Web cache redirection so that the HTTP traffic of the users in these VLANs can be redirected to the Web cache.

By default, the HTTP traffic is not redirected to the Web cache.

Display Web cache redirection configuration and the state of the Web cache

display webcache

Optional

This command can be executed in any view.

&  Note:

l      Web cache redirection configurations made in Ethernet port view and system view come into the same effect.

l      If the configured Web cache is inaccessible, Web cache redirection cannot be enabled.

l      A switch supports only one Web cache configuration. If you configure a new Web cache, the new configuration will replace the old one.

l      If the VLAN where Web cache is located does not have the corresponding VLAN interface on the switch, this configuration will be failed.

l      If the VLAN interface is not up, Web cache redirection will be failed.

l      You can use the undo webcache all command to remove all Web cache redirection configurations.

1.2.3  Configuration Example

I. Networking requirements

In a company, the marketing department is located at VLAN10 connected to Ethernet 1/0/1 of the switch, R&D department is located at VLAN20 connected to Ethernet1/0/2, and President’s office at VLAN30 connected to Ethernet1/0/3. VLAN10 is in the network segment 10.15.17.1/24, VLAN20 in 10.15.18.1/24, and VLAN30 in 10.15.19.1/24. The IP address of the Web cache is 10.15.20.2, MAC address is 000f-e20f-0101, and the Web cache VLAN is VLAN40. Ethernet3/0/4 of the switch connects to the Web cache. It is required to enable Web cache redirection to redirect the HTTP traffic of R&D department, marketing department, and President’s office.
